YOUR GOAL
0 of 5 SMART
- Specific. Describe exactly what will change, in one sentence of six words or more.
- Measurable. Name what you will count, where you are now and where you want to get to.
- Achievable. Say what makes this doable: time, help, budget, and which parts are in your control.
- Relevant. Say why it matters: “because…” or “so that…”. Link it to the team’s goals or a real problem.
- Time-bound. Set a deadline. Without one, the goal quietly slides.
By [date], I will [what will change].
How to write a SMART goal
Start with the change, not the wish
“Improve customer service” is a wish. “Cut first-reply time on customer emails from 18 hours to 4 by March” is a goal. Name the thing that will be different, put a number on it, and pick a date.
Aim at what you control
“Get promoted” depends on other people. “Lead two client projects end to end” is in your hands. Goals you can act on every week get done. Goals that hinge on someone else’s decision mostly get worried about.
Check in before the deadline
Most goals fail quietly in the middle. Put the 25%, halfway and 75% check-ins in the diary now, and bring them to your one-on-ones. If you’re behind at halfway, change the plan rather than the deadline.
